As a designer, or a creative in general, it's easy to think branding is about what we can create. With our skills, our knowledge of design and how people will perceive visuals is a big thing for us. But, and there's always a but, it takes much more than that to develop a brand.

The first piece of evidence we can give as to why a brand's success is not just down to design, is the vast difference between a good brand and a great brand. There are many different factors that come in to play and design is just one of them.

The first step is to see through the eyes of someone else, through a customer or consumer, to gather ideas on how they understand a brand, product or service. This in itself is a rare skill, and without it a brand will never reach it's full potential. Branding doesn't begin or end in design, a successful brand is a continuous growth of knowledge, understanding and broad thought, of the people you want to sell to, and the trends that move and swiftly change throughout time.
